Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the widespread redactions raise significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are entirely censored, and numerous of the men depicted in photographs have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these documents for an extended period only to release them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a law mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative influencers were given physical folders of materials that contained no new data.
