RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
